Top ideas for a last-minute getaway

There’s nothing more exciting than booking some time off work and deciding on the spur of the moment where you want to go for a holiday – it’s incredibly exhilarating to travel on last-minute deals.

That said, there are so many great offers available nowadays that it can be tough to narrow down your options. So, if you’re arranging a last-minute break, check out my three top picks for some winter sun. If you’d like to see some more suggestions, take a look at what’s on offer here.

Ibiza is at its busiest during the summer months when the super clubs are in full swing and everyone is out to have a fantastic time, day and night. However, there’s a lot to be said for travelling to this charming Balearic Island in the winter instead. For a start, you’ll miss most of the crowds, which is great if you want to fully appreciate Ibiza’s sights and natural attractions.

While partying is what this destination is best known for, it’s actually a much more varied place for a getaway than you may think. For a start, Ibiza is a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its fascinating history and areas of natural beauty. Winter is a wonderful time to discover the great outdoors here as it’s still sunny but not uncomfortably hot for hiking or cycling.

There are numerous walking trails through untouched sections of woodland and along the coast, so you can really get away from it all and enjoy the scenery. If you’d like to include a bit of culture in your break, spend time in Ibiza’s Upper Town – or Alta Vila. This is an outstanding example of a fortified acropolis in a Renaissance style and is well worth exploring.

One of the great things about travelling last-minute is that you can find affordable deals to far-flung destinations. Heading stateside could therefore be on the cards and Orlando is a wonderful choice. There are the varied theme parks and if you’ve found a great price for the rest of your holiday you can use some of the cash you’ve saved to buy your entry tickets.

Orlando’s also got some fantastic beaches, so there are lots of opportunities to soak up the sun and if you don’t mind travelling a little way out of the city you can discover amazing wilderness areas like the Florida Everglades or the stunning beauty of the Florida Keys.

This is also a great choice if you want a last-minute break with the kids, as the city is home to some of the best family-friendly attractions in the world. SeaWorld is always a winner with children and a day at one of the water parks is bound to keep everyone – young and old – happy.

I’ll come a little closer to home for my final suggestion – Cyprus. This island has everything if you’re looking for sunshine getaway with a generous helping of culture and history on the side. Cyprus has a fascinating past with ties to Greek mythology and several ancient civilisations.

Travel here and you can visit sites like Aphrodite’s Rock and the Roman Tombs of the Kings, and see some amazing Byzantine frescoes that are protected by UNESCO. There are many gorgeous sandy beaches you can relax on, too, with the best of these typically found in the south and south-west of the island.

And with cities like Paphos, Limassol and Larnaca to discover as well, you won’t be short of things to do on your trip. Cyprus’s varied attractions also make it an excellent choice if you’re travelling with a group of people who don’t all share the same interests.
